Salvatore Baglio: press

While I worked on compiling this newsletter issue, the NEMS stereo had the honor of playing these record releases: Salvatore Baglio, "Memory Theatre" Greta Gertler and the Extroverts, "Edible Restaurant (Appetizer Edition)" Mars, "Mars EP" Rubblebucket Orchestra, "Rose's Dream" Fine records, every last one of them. catching up very fast.
As to which of these records is wildest, it is no contest. "Memory Theatre" by Salvatore Baglio easily wins the prize. Baglio has gone on a psychedelic trip, so to speak, and with striking results. Beach Boys and Beatles psychedelic influences are evident - particularly the Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks collaborations; and like the Beatles and Beach Boys, Baglio has produced an excellent variety of sounds. What I would like to do next time I play the disc is listen to the effects, which Baglio employs quite expertly, to see whether they produce common threads that run through the album and unify it or, on another hand, if they vary considerably from one distinct track to the next. If it is possible for one's ears to be kept on their toes, the ever surprising "Memory Theatre" is an album to do it. "Memory Theatre" is a fine and fitting followup to the wild and wonderful "Superheterodyne" (CD, Vinyl Frontier, 2005).

"Perhaps the most inspiring and original set of tunes we've heard yet. This manic little screwball high-school review has something all of it's own. Exquisite tunes, tirelessly referential images, soundtracky, sequential and plucked from a sparkly constellation of toys and stars. Bloody marvellous. Every tune a winner." SALVATORE BAGLIO
International Pop Overthrow Festival

Sal’s clever solipstic sojourns through his past (from his brilliant new CD Memory Theatre) carry the night with sheer personality. “Starboy” and “The Boy with the Amplifier Head” shine with delicacy and dynamics before he decides to crank it up on “45” and “Rock Band.” It’s a thrill to see him churning out radiant solos with acoustic bassist Sven Larson matching him note for note. Sal always puts out 100 percent—doesn’t matter the size of the crowd or the venue. The trio finishes to a rousing ovation.

What follows is sheer poetry—a poignant suite that places the heart of Salvatore Baglio onto a grand musical scale. It includes most of the sensational tunes from his new album, as well as selected tunes from his Rock E. Rollins period interspersed with personal favorites like “Waterloo Sunset” and “Happiness is a Warm Gun,” offering sordid stories about his flamboyant past growing up in East Boston, and concluding with his transformation into a reformed, rejuvenated performer. All this laid bare with just an acoustic guitar! For this stunning personal declaration of faith, he receives a standing ovation from the transfixed audience. Phew!

... Baglio offers up a certified lo-fi gem with his new release Memory Theatre.
Creating stark musical backgrounds ... his voice in varied states of consciousness...
Baglio's subject matter is just as wacky and diverse as his choice of musical weaponry.

" Baglio is truly New England Rock Royalty and though the crown might be slightly bloodied from the wear of the road, it shines with the jewels of genius"
